I used to get about 300 with my stdt if i drove it hard so to get that with a gti is good

I'd be quite disappointed at that to be honest if you've largely been driving like Miss Daisy - it's not terrible by any means, but 350 miles to a tank should be achieveable easily enough in a 1.6 GTi that's in a healthy state of tune. Assuming that you're putting 45 litres in to refill the tank, 300 miles only equates to around 30mpg.

O/T..

 How hard is hard? I get another 100+ on top of that, driving normally...I went to Bangor and did a bit of running about and the odometer is reading 390 miles and I've got just less than a quarter tank.

Search will bring up lots, but for starters, ensure the ignition timing is optimised for the fuel you're running (retarded ignition timing reduces power and economy), check the ECU temp sensor is working (when they fail, the ECU always thinks the engine is cold and runs rich as a result), check the TPS is correctly set and works (the fuel-cut on overrun works off this), and confirm that you're not running a mis-match of 1.6 and 1.9 fuel parts (ECU/AFM/injectors)

For a combined cycle I'd say that is reasonable. Although 'combined' is a bit subjective. You should be able to get 360 miles from a tank on a long motorway journey.

My 205 GTi6 on daily driving does around 270 miles before the light comes on (about 27mpg). But on a long run I recently did 316 miles light NOT on including a RR session, about 36mpg. And that day I wasn't driving Miss Daisy (which I normally do) :)

That was driving very hard which i normally do but i only ever do short runs as i have a van for work

I rarely got more than 300 miles from a full tank of diesel
