Engine Cut Out

iv owned my 1991 205 gti 1.6 for about a year now. its been a resteration project with no major mechanical problems until recently whilst motorway driving when engine cut out in gear, rev counter died then regained power. checked all obvious connections but fault keeps reoccuring. any advice appreciated.
