What Alternator?

Recommended Posts

To explain my logic (or lack of it). my car stalls with any kind of electrical load,if i connect my car with jump leads to another car (and the other car doesnt even have to be running) its perfect, you can turn everything on and no hunting or trying to stall so im just wondering what amp alternator should my car have? Its a J reg 1.6 GTI,at the moment its got a 50amp,also what amp battery should it have?I think mine is 360 amp hour.

Thanks in advance

If you put an ammeter across the battery, it should read over 14 volts input.

I had a problem where my alternator packed up when i was miles away from home.

A 50A alternator should be fine, you only really need a bigger one if you're running extra electrical accessories such as big amps/spotlights etc, it certainly shouldnt be dropping out with the standard electrical loads on it (eg headlights + heated windscreen + heater blower). Is the battery fully charged when it does this? cos the battery should still be able to power everything for a short while if the alternator packs in...suggests something funny is going on.

Thanks for the reply,i know something very funny is going on,only thing is i dont find it funny B) . If you take a look at my thread "Stalling At Idle" you will see what i have done. Its the only thing wrong with the car, i Wish it would fix itself.

Mine doesn't do this. You can try my alternator on your car if you like? In fact, I'll check tomorrow to see if I saved the alt' from the auto I broke if you want a long term trial.

Yeah I read that when you posted it...its the sort of problem where if i could go and poke it it would be so much simpler, but its a pain to diagnose remotely B) have you tried just swapping out the battery? I wouldnt expect it to change anything, its sounding like the alternator regulator is packing in or something.

I managed to put a spare alternator on and no joy,i will try a bigger amp hour battery, doubt it will work though, im also going to try putting a jump lead from the battery to the engine as an extra earth,if it cures it ill make up one. Fingers crossed B)
