Front Wheel Bearng Issues

Recommended Posts

Hello

Well it seems as if my car wants to develop a new problem almost daily (cue cries of 'typical 205'!) Getting close to the end of my tether with it this week though

Sorry if the explanation is a little long winded, I wanted to include everything just in case.

I replaced both front wheel bearings last week as part of preventative maintainance. Everything pressed in easily and seemed smooth and without play. I've driven about 100 miles since then without a problem until lo and behold, this morning I a get a really bad metal on metal screeching noise coming from the offside when turning left.

So I took the wheel off this afternoon and there was that much play in the bearing that it allowed the disk to move and rub against the caliper causing the noise.

Taking the hub apart it looks like the inner race on the inside has been forced outwards leaving it with loads of movement. Now looking at the assembly it looks like the hub nut hadn't clamped the bearing down properly and putting it all back together again there is a gap between the flat face on the end of the driveshaft and the inner race of the bearing.

Question 1 ) Is this right and have I just picked up a duff bearing.

Question 2 ) If this isn't right how can I fix it.

The driveshaft is a GKN recon straight out the box.

Thanks folks!!

Chris

If the bearing has been pressed in and the circlip secured properly, and the hub nut tightened to torque setting, the bearing should'nt budge! just check they gave you the right bearing, if you still have the old one you can compare. and if the the driveshaft is new check the diameter where the bearing sits to ensure its the right one
