Not Started Engine For 6+months

Recommended Posts

JayCC

Due to my 205 being off the road since the summer (after blowing a hose) i have not started it.

I've got my new Baker BM hoses now and will be getting it ready for the Spring this weekend.

Are there any precautions i should take before charging the battery and starting the engine?

Its a 1.9 8v engine.

Cheers

Take the plugs out, pop a bit of oil down each bore, then with the plugs still out (and the battery charged) give it a spin over on the starter motor for a few seconds, look for the oil pressure warning light going out.

Once you have established oil pressure, put the plugs back in and fire it up as normal, keep a careful eye on the oil pressure and water temp gauges.

just do the usual, oil & coolant checks and a quick scan over everyting to ensure nothing major is ammis.

it'll probably take a few cranks to start which will probably be enough to build oil pressure before it fires after tha just let it idle or slightly above idle for a bit.

check oil and coolant again after a few mins running.

Better to do as Tom Fenton said IMO; remove the spark plugs, this not only relieves the crank of any pressure on the bearings whilst oil pressure is gained, it also spins the engine over much faster. The critical time is the time gaining oil pressure, whilst the light is on damage can occur and if that's done without any load it's much better IMO.

All being well, it should normally fire up instantly when you put the plugs back in.

Thanks for the quick response guys.

So i should take HT leads and spark plugs out, add a small amount of oil into each bore.

Connect 12v direct to starter for afew secs?

Then put it all back together and start as normal?

Cheers

You won't have to connect 12V to the starter, just crank it on the key. With the plugs etc out it won't start. <_<

Just unplug the the signal/supply wires to the coil next to the HT connector on the coil, will stop you from getting a shock lol, and then crank it over like normal with plugs out like tom said.

How old is the timing belt on it, might be worth a change if its been unused for such a long period exposed to damp cold conditions, and it been on the car for a long time or lots of miles. Nothing to panic about just a consideration, and peace of mind when giving it the beans on those country roads on a nice spring day drive B)

Thanks guys,

Cambelt was changed about 4k ago (although that was about 2.5 years ago) so should be OK although i will check its condition to be safe.
