Opinions On Engine Treatment Products

Recommended Posts

I'd like to know what people think about engine treatment products and oil additives. Do they work? Does anyone advise against them and if so why?

Thanks,

Andrei

In my opinion, a triumph of marketing over form. Unless you are using an oil that is about 60yrs old there is no need at all for them. Modern oils are stuffed full of anti-oxidising, anti-scuff and many more additives.

In fact, most of the analysis of these products I have seen shows they area con, in some cases they are just parafin!

Save yourself the money and just get a half decent oil in the first place. (I.e most semi-synths!)

I use Agip Racing 10w60 full synthetic, but i don't know the history of my engine, it's hasn't been run a long time and I was thinking of putting in some engine treatment until I have the budget for a rebuild.

Some additives claim they have different metals in them that restore worn or scratched surfaces. I've seen these go into old and worn engines and people say they feel the difference and a lot of the knocks and rattles go away.

if you pour hot tar in I'd say that would stop the rattles too but mightened be much good for the engine !

I'm being smart obviously but as stated previously any quality modern oil has all the additives you need, provided you use the right weight etc for the application.

that leaves the additives as a pure marketing gimmic in my mind anyway.

Just good/quality oil with regular changes + quality oil filter and nothing else really <_< if the engine knocks/rattles then better do a rebuild than pouring PTFE or ceramic crap inside (unless you're intend to sell the car to some poor guy !) ..

If you have A Graham Bell-s book you can find very interesting info inside regarding this oil additives , the man himself has been invited on the product demonstration and the demonstration was done on a few cars/engine but with carefully "modified parts" so that people while watching could actually "believe" that the stuff really works ! but closer look at the engines reviled the magic additive mystery ...

You need to ask yourself , if this stuff really "works" , why don't they use this stuff in competition race/rally engines ?

Also just add, If it claims it can remove sooty and carbon deposits, and your engine has a lot of this in and around the cylinders, the additives can make these deposits come off in large chunks, which can cause damage, ie, stopping valves closing completley ect. If the engine is running correctly in the first place, these deposits will just burn away as the engine is run. Except in extreme cases obviously.

Well i didn't know if these were used or not in competition engines, that's why I asked you guys about them :). I was reluctant to the idea of aditives from the start, but now I'll know to keep away.

There's been alot of controversy in the states about PTFE additives clogging oil filters.

Hi waiting to be shot down but personally always used Slick 50, I know for experience my cars have ran cooler, especially on a A series 1380 engine, running 115 bhp 20 years ago, and that it idled smoother even with a kent 285 cam. Then always changed the oil/filters regualry on tuned engines anyway.

I dont doubt it Martyn that Slick50 worked well 20 years ago, it was developed when engine oil was at a far lesser quality than now. I just dont think it or any other additives have the same advantages anymore with modern quality multigrade oils.
