Hi Vicky,

I've moved this into the correct technical section for you. (The GTI has an XU engine)

The noise sounds like its possibly clutch related but it also could be the gearbox idler bearing.

What type of pitch is the noise? (grumbling or squealing)

Both require the gearbox removing to fix them but the clutch is going to be the cheapest.

Have a look in the For Sale section once the noise has been properly diagnosed but just to help you in yout search if you choose to replace the box your car, what year is your car & where is reverse?

Graham.

Whining on the overun could well be a worn diff and oil leaks are really quite common. With the oil leak you need to be sure what is leaking first. Distributer oil seals are common and as this is over the gearbox end of the engine it can look like a gearbox oil leak.

Hi, if its moore of a rattle sound its probably a worn clutch release bearing, when you push the clutch peddle down doe's the noise stop? if so a new clutch kit should solve this. hope this helps

I would have thought its the gearbox bearings, this is either a gearbox strip and rebuild,or just throw it away and get another, which would be the quicker and cheaper option. As for the oil leak they normally leak from the driveshaft seals as some people dont replace these when removing driveshafts. If you get a new gearbox get whoever fits it to change the driveshaft seals in the new box. As for the 205 causing you so much trouble its only because it likes you, thats why mine breaks B)
