What a day! :D

The drive up to Emerald was great, great weather and the car was well behaved all the way up. Mapping started off as a bit of a disappointment, the first power run showed 174bhp, which is a bit of an improvement on standard (it was 169, my reading of 176 was caused by a hiccup on the graph apparently), but not really what I expected. So after a bit of tinkering with the cam timing it made 178, and then after some fuel and ignition tinkering it made 183.2bhp @ 6687rpm, and 149.3bhp @ 6254rpm. :D

Some graphs for your enjoyment:

Standard vs Now:

SSL21722.jpg

As you can see, its made a pretty healthy improvement throughout. :D

And for fun, Now vs uber-cams:

SSL21720.jpg

Pretty amazing difference there!

Had a nice drive home, then stopped off at a signmakers round the corner from my place to get some vinyl for the sun-strip. Cost me £20!! Was a bit sore handing over that much money for about £2 worth of vinyl, but the sod wouldn't budge on the price. :D

Anywho, all in all, a very good day. :)

Looks healthy, I stopped and grabbed vinyl after getting my tyres fitted was £10 for it, if that makes you feel any better, although for it home and I measured it a bit too depth, 11" sunstrip was a bit much lol

Good result, weird it's so low down the rev range, same you couldn't get them working at 7.4krpm and rev out a bit higher, still roll on the bodies :D

See you in the green hell shortly :D

Yeah, it is quite low down but I put that down to the standard plenum. My sunstrip is 9.25" deep at the edges, probably a bit less in the middle.. seems to be a pretty good size. :D

I'll get a pic of it later.

My new Gaz golds arrived today, so my old GHA ones are now up for grabs! Since they're brand new internally (and have new rods) I think £300 is a reasonable price. I'll supply them with 280lb and 350lb springs too. :)

Pics and a for sale thread will come when I get the old ones off (weekend), Dr Sarty and GTi Si have 1st & 2nd dibs.

I hereby step down, aside, relinquish my dibs, bow out, whatever.

Nothing to do with price.

Down to Colin Satchell having plans. :)

Mkayyy been busy again today, my Gaz Golds arrived on Friday so after 2 days of having to ignore them while I fix my dead lawn I set about fitting them today. The problem with my old coilovers was that the threads were way too short for eccentric top mounts, and that there was only about an inch of suspension travel with the 14" wheels. Here's the extent of the top mount problem.

SSL21727.jpg

SSL21728.jpg

There was enough thread to tighten them down, but there was no way of holding the strut to tighten them properly so I had to loctite the arse out of it and to be honest I really didn't trust it. It'll do for going up to mapping, but not for taking it on track.

So, enter shiny new ones with short bodies and longer threads.

SSL21729.jpg

SSL21730.jpg

There's about 8mm between the beginning of the thread and the end of the bearing so I nabbed the lower spacer out of the bearing as its no longer needed, and ground it down a bit.

SSL21731.jpg

To slip in the top.

SSL21732.jpg

Then tightened it all down and re-fitted them. I also marked the eccy mounts so its easy to get both sides the same.

SSL21735.jpg

Mmm, extra camber. :)

SSL21736.jpg

So with that done I moved to the rears, I had to take the beam off to get the torsion bars out as they had seized in. One of them took a right battering to get out, despite only being in there a year.

So I set the ride height and fitted the new 24mm bars, it was set at 303mm with the standard bars, so I went for 300mm for now.

SSL21733.jpg

Thing is, it just isn't low enough at the rear! It needs to be down about another 20-30mm so I'll have to re-set it tomorrow.

SSL21737.jpg

So the old ones are now officially up for grabs, I need some pics of them but I'll stick a for sale thread up in a sec.

For 24mm TB's on a 205 beam, you'll want something in the order of about 285mm in my experience

IF you're planning to run yours as low as mine was then on 24's I'd agree with shuttle, maybe a touch lower, I'm at 280mm on the 25's and it' slightly lower than it was on the 24's with 285mm so maybe split the difference? got for 282-283mm

Enjoy

Also quickie, did you put a lower sleave washer on the bottom of the damperbefore going in the top mount?? I didn't manage that much thread out the top on mine :S

No, the dampers had been machined to fit inside the bearing so it wasn't needed. That's why they're bolted down with nylocs rather than the nasty shouldered nuts. The lower spacer was the part I ground down to support the threaded section inside the bearing.

Just realised how similar Gaz Golds look to Ledas, perhaps unsurprisingly!

I have the same top mounts as those, on the PTS Billies they use the shouldered/sleeved top nut etc.

Looking good though!

Yup, a bit like that but looks a bit more substantial tbh, and with a lower one too, i'll try and dig out a pic!

They're probably the same as what I had, I bought the top mounts off Bennett and he had ground some of the hex part down to try and get more threads engaged on the strut. I don't know why they don't just come with nylocs and a spacer to be honest.

Been sorting out the rear ride height today and it looks much better! I went for 285mm BCD and its just right. I have to say though, having never adjusted torsion bars properly, its one of the most fiddly arse frustrating jobs I've ever done. Anyway, the results are worth it.

SSL21745.jpg

Sitting pretty. :)

I adjusted the front down a bit too, it now sits 9.75" rear and 9.25" front ride height, measured floor to top of sill. Taken it out for a drive and it feels very nice, very firm but not harsh even on the crappy roads out here.

Gratuitous slag shot.

SSL21742.jpg

Gratuitious arty shot.

SSL21744.jpg

I also fitted some pedal wotsits, some OMP cast jobbies which are really nice and grippy.

SSL21747.jpg

So my list of pre-'ring jobs is getting shorter, just have to trace an oil leak, wire in the screen, make a mount for the wiper stalk (currently dangling), reinforce the bonnet, cover up the electrics and check the tracking. Only a few days to go. :(

Looking pretty good now. I might have to get some of those OMP pedals. Have you weighed the car since it's been back on the road?

Yeah, they're nice pedals! Not too McDonalds. ;)

I haven't weighed it yet, I'm going down to Hatfield on Wednesday so I might see if I can use the public weighbridge.

Oh yeah it's keeping the bugs out nicely

no not yet, I'll bring the relay up with me, figured I'd hack in to the rear screen circuit to power it with the timed relay in place of the std one, need to rig a cigi lighter too so I can charge my phone lol.

That camber looks epic by the way, more than mine and I've dialled mine to 2 holes off max  we'll see when we get the "gauges" on the cars I guess.
