Recommended Posts

if i was to fit a set of twin carbs on a post cat vehicle, will it still be tested under the same mot emission rules as a standard model?

im concerned that fitting carbs to my car may make it run to rich and fail!

if your car was made with a cat then unless its fitted to with an engine maid pre cat (and you have proof of that engine being pre cat) then it will be tested as a post cat motor

if your car was made pre cat then regardless of engine it wont be tested as a car with a cat

hope this makes sense

yep make sense, so do the people on here running twin carbs run them on pre cat models only? i was thinking along the lines of running carbs on a post cat vehicle. it then occured that the cat would get buggered from the carbs and running a decat would deffo fail an mot! is there any way around this?

The regs have been changed recently, so that a post Cat car with a modified engine of any age, is liable to post Cat testing. The manual says: "If an engine has been modified in any way, it still has to meet the exhaust emission requirements according to the age of the vehicle. "

But either way, convincing a tester that they ought to do anything other than test according to the vehicle age can be a struggle. Getting them to accept a K-plate car that never had a Cat is a struggle.

Yeah, exactly. The test type is based on the age of the vehicle or the age of the engine - whichever is oldest. However, the owness is on the owner not the tester to prove the age of the engine if this is believed to make the vehicle test incorect.

Modified engines are no exemption to a vehicle being tested based on age, in any case.

So to answer your question - yes it would be tested as a cat equiped vehicle (sep 92 on) and almost certainly not pass the MOT emissions test (someone may prove otherwise but they'd be very lucky). This pretty much rules out carbs for road on a CAT car but throttle bodies and new mappable management (££££) would be fine!

yes m8 being a mot tester myself if u have a car needs a cat post 92 then bodies and management sorts that out no hassle if not u need a nice tester ask MAXI on here

I can vouch for that. I had to get a letter from my local pug dealer to say my car was never fitted with a cat.
