Rear Wheel Bearings

Recommended Posts

swordfish210

Hi, my 205 could really do with some new wheel bearings and i've no idea how to replace them. I've got a disc'd rear beam (1.9GTI) and i did try a search but i couldnt find anything. Thanks. Mark

The hub and bearing comes as a complete unit on disk braked models, rather than as a seperate bearing like on drum brake models.

I've not done one in a long time but from memory, it's as simple as undoing the hub nut, using a hub puller to remove the whole hub (and remove the remains of the bearing if it comes off in several pieces), put the new hub/bearing assembly on, and tighten hub nut to the specified torque. I'd guess that the Haynes jokebook should say something about it?

If i had one i would have a look. I left it in the garage and the water got to it so the next time i picked it up and it sort of melted in my hands. I could do with another one to get the torque settings for the TU engine.

I'd better do it one night at Uni as i dont have a hub puller at home.

If you don't have a hub puller, you can do it the other way, namely knocking the stub axle through the middle of the hub out out of the arm, thus releasing the hub/bearing (and then knock the stub axle back in prior to fitting the new hub)

I've never had much luck hammering the stub axles out personally, they will press out but when I've tried I couldn't shift them without damaging the ends. However if you get the "hub" off it usually leaves the inner race on the stub axle, to get this off a pair of bearing seperators is ideal but if not a decent cold chisel will do the job!
