Another Problem With Badly Cracked Exhaust Manifold

Recommended Posts

lee-bg

I found today that my exhaust manifold is very badly cracked near the valves/head side.

Each of the tubes that attaches to the gasket is very badly cut almost all around and i got a hissing noise from 2500 revs upwards.

I've marked it on this picture. Cracks are from the bottom side of the exhaust manifold only.

I read some old topics, but couldnt find specific reason for such bad cracks. Could it be because i used to have my "exhaust manifold heat shiled"

mounted on place since i repaired the car.

I've only recently removed the heat shield and after that i found the cracks and of course black stains on heatshield from inside.

Just for info I've never had wraps on exhaust manifold.

Also a second thought, my whole exhaust system is fixed/welded to the end (with bushes at rear silencer),

no movebale parts ...so it may have put strain on the manifold itself . Is this possible ? anyone experienced such problem.

As i've once welded the exhaust manifold do you think its possible to weld the such big cracks again ? Any advice how to strengthen the tubes would be nice as the moment i cannot afford a brand new 4-2-1 other manifold and all the Mi16 exhaust manifolds that i find in scrapyards. are cracked.

Yes mate... me... and it makes noise like a liftener...

i suppose the 4-2-1 manifold is the best solution!

I`ve seen one on ebay and is not so expensive.

Check your engine mounts, if there badly worn you get a lot of movement on the engine when accelerating and deccelerating, this puts alot of stress on the manifold. try talking to a specialist welder they might be able to do something with your old manifold.

Hi,

I thought of engine mounts too, but they seem ok so far and they are almost new. few thousand miles - original Peugeot dealer.

Actually the 'repairman' said something with the springs too tight. Also the 'ring' that sits between manifold end and downpipe was worn out

and hitted the manifold pretty hard each time engine was revved/started or stopped. That put immense force back to the manifold and it cracked.

Actually it cracked so badly that if i drove like this for another 2000 km i guess it would have felt apart totally.

Now its a lot of welding around the cracks and we put a new springs/ring on the conenction between manfiold and downpipe.

I also plan to use a new "dampers" that attach the rear exhaust to the underbody of car.

Found some nice "Red ones" on Ebay.co.uk - they claim their "dampers" remove the vibrations from the whole exhaust system.

And the advice from my 'repairman' was to change the 'ring' and springs every 5000 km to be on 'safe side'.

Thanks all for info. Hope that helps for future reference.
