Driver Side Wiper Slipping?

Recommended Posts

rapidcossie

When travelling over 60 mph my driver side wiper travels too far and leaves the screen hitting the rubber and a pillar.

I have replaced the arm with a brand new one but still have the problem.

How can this be fixed?

cheers

Euan

Check the spindle condition.

Mine nut came loose a while ago, and did what you discribe, so if yours isnt loose, maybe the spindle is damaged so its not contacting properly ?

The reason mine did this was because someone in the past had taken the linkages out and put them back the wrong way. They are slightly different lengths, meaning the passenger side should sweep over a slightly larger arc than the driver side. If you scrape the surface rust away you'll actually find the measurement engraved in them. Check you've got the shorter one on the drivers side.

Here's the topic where I posted pics of my wiper linkages after refurbing them, and it shows the stamped lengths on the arms.

Important Note: In the linked topic I state that the shorter linkage should be on the passenger side, which conflicts with what I've said in my post above. I believe it should be the shorter one on the passenger side, since when I posted in the linked topic it was fresh on my mind. And thinking about it in my head now, it makes sense that the shorter one would give the greater angle of sweep and so should be on the passenger side.
