Gti-6 Cylinder Head Problems

Recommended Posts

oli-pug

Recently, I've been getting a lot of noise from the valve train on my gti-6 engine. I thought the mostly likely culprit would be a sticking hydraulic lifter so I decided to have a look earlier.

One of the lifters is mightily seized, cannot get it to come apart for the life of me! Any tips?

But I also came across this nasty surprise!

I fitted a Peter Taylor regrind before the engine went into my car, and it's looking like something was up with my fitting procedure or a bit of debris has found its way onto the cam bearing surface :(

Still usable, or are the head and cam scrap?

personally i'd make sure theres no hi spots on the cam and head (both surfaces are nice and smooth) and refit it, makin sure everythins clean mind.

Ive managed to get it out of the head, but the piston assembly wont budge. I'm going to leave it soaking in degreaser over night then have another go at whacking it against a piece of wood in the morning.

Lol i'm trying to get the piston and spring out of the bucket to recondition the moving parts. So i'm hitting the bottom edge of the lifter squarely against some wood to release the parts. Got it from peter taylors guide on the website.

Sorry for the confusion!

when i stripped my mi16 ones some of them took more work than others. I think soaking them will help but then its simply a case of perserverance. Keep whacking them and they will eventually come apart

hi did you fit same shims??

the cam doesn’t work with out shims!

i never tried it with shims, the base circle is to small , there is no pre lift on the hydraulic lifters, you loose up to 10kw @ wheels and a horrible noise .

speak with petert he needs to send you same shims .

Try soaking them in some thin motor oil overnight- always works!

Not sure what degreaser will do other than get the very clean :(

That doesn't sound good Magic. I'll get in contact with Peter now, he never mentioned anything about shims when I bought it :(

I'm guessing you already know which cam I'm using then, how come you got such a good result with it? 118kw @ wheels was it...

Still haven't had any luck with the sticking lifter. I had it soaking in degreaser for 12 hours then some old engine oil for another 6 hours or so, gave it a good hour of whacking but it won't free up. I'll probably replace it with a good 2nd hand one, unless someone at work can sort it tomorrow.

I think i'll fit the standard cam for now till i hear from petert

I had a bit of a mare taking my MI lifters apart, tried this: http://forum.205gtidrivers.com/index.php?showtopic=90908 came apart in no time and saved my hands from getting bruised.

Made the job much easier! Make sure you whack em against a piece of hard wood too - I started by hitting them against a block of pine but they just embedded themselves in the wood...
