Fuel Pump Wiring Shorted On Exhaust

Recommended Posts

Craigo

in short, my car has been at pug for a cambelt change, and this morning it was started up to move it, then it just cut out and would not start again.

the techy (who is a friend) got under it and found that the exhaust has been rubbing on the fuel pump wiring he thinks causing it to short the Relay to the fuel pump,

he put his multimeter onto the fuel pump and its not getting any power,so he thinks it will be the relay or the wiring,

so at the moment its stationary with a dead fuel pump/wiring!

basically, pug want £90 for a new relay and im not paying that! anyone know where we can source one cheaper?

as i wasnt there i do not know the location of the fuel pump relay, is it in the main fuse board under the dash or is it located with the fuel pump under the car? as i do have a few spare relays for the main fuse board? if it is in the main board, which one is it? also is the fuel pump fused?

im asking this as ive not got either of my haynes manuals with me, and ive got a track day on wednesday so need to sort it asap!!!!

also as the exhaust was rubbing on the wiring, the wiring my be dead, how easy would this be to replace? again, anyone know anywhere i can get new stuff

thanks in advance,

a very panicked and stressed craig!

TRACK DAY IS WEDNESDAY

If you get stuck you could just wire a live through a seperate toggle switch on your dashboard to the fuel pump. Make sure you use a fuse if you do this.

Im confused how the exhaust could be rubbing on the fuel pump wiring?? as all the wires and relay are inside the car. i know you say the mechanic is your mate but i think somone is having you on.....

My thoughts exactly, none of the fuel pump wiring runs ouside the car & cetainly nowhere near the exhaust.

Im pretty much doing this trick right now, I will be using an inertia switch also though.

thanks guys, as i wasnt there, im not sure then what it shorted on, but apparently its shorted on something! he said exhaust, but he must have been wrong!

do you have a description of how you are doing that? is fitting the toggle switch so you can just turn the fuel pump on and off at leisure rather than having the car start the fuel pump?

thanks

Will probably not use a toggle switch, but will take a live feed straight off wire 2 on one of the two brown multiplugs around the steering column area.

In the event of an accident or shunt the Inertia switch will break the circuit, otherwise the pump may still run and this could be potentially very dangerous!

So you must fit an Inertia switch inline

location of brown multiplugs :

Have you tried doing a Ohms test on the fuel pump circuit with a multimeter though?

afaik the mechanc tested the c=fuel pump circuit and no power is gettin to the fuel pump,

thanks for that tho! :(

No problem. Sorry, something I forgot to mention is that the Inertia has to be mounted very securely in the upright position,

also mount it out the way of any area where it could be potentially triggered unknowingly!

thanks for that mate, got someone working on the car today, so fingers crossed he will sort something out with it so we can use it on wednesday!

i love last minute complications!

bit of an update on this,

a friend has been looking at the car today, and been through all the fuel pump wiring to try and find a short, with no luck, so we HOPE its just the relay that has decided to give up, and nothing else! do Fuel pumps just DIE? we know that no power is currently gettin to the pump, and yes we have checked the fuse and replaced it anyway!

the engine turns over, but wont start, due to no fuel, and there is no priming noise coming from the fuel pump!

hopefully royal mail will deliver a new relay from BAZ tomoz, (thanks again), if it is not the relay, then tomoz night will see a probable massive bodge on the fuel pump to get it wired into a switched live! :S

do people think that it will be the relay??? i need someone with experience to reassure me

thanks

Quite a lot :D

could mean its a Fuseboard issue.

ahh right, well afaik all the other electrics are working...

you know the fuel pump relay, does that JUST control the fuel pump, or does it have another function as well?

thanks

Just controls the fuel pump but it has an input from the ecu via the injectors & also from the coil as a safety cut out when the engine stops etc.

The relay is about the most comon reason for no power to the fuel pump so I'd suspect yours has died.

well unfortunately, it looks like the relay isnt going to turn up in the post,

so im off to an electrical supplier to get the bits i need to wire a switched live to the fuel pump!!

does anyone know of the top off their heads, which is the main live input on the fuel pump?

thanks
