No Oil Pressure/oil Temp Readings On Dash

Recommended Posts

Guest senna2

hallo all, I'm lucky enough to of recently got my hands on a 205gti, its only had 1 owner from new, and its in topaz blue.

The only trouble is with the oil pressure and oil temp needles they don't budge even thou th oil light comes on and goes out when i start the car. I don't think its a problem with mileage as the car has only done 65000

Hope someone has an answer!

Probably electrical gremlins.

The oil pressure gauge sender is on the front of the block, and is the larger of the two - sort of mushroom shaped. Check the wire is plugged in. If all looks OK, short the wire against the engine block - if it shows full pressure on the gauge, you know the wiring and gauge are OK.

Oil temperature sender is on the back of the sump, and the wire to it is notorious for breaking off so check that first. It's worth noting though that in the current cold weather, it will take a considerable amount of time for the oil temperature to get high enough to register on the gauge, and indeed probably won't move at all just pottering around town.

Both issues (along with most faults you're likely to find) have been covered before, and a search should reveal more info :)

I'd suggest making a new sensor loom as I did, never had gauge problems again. It's really very easy to do and well worth the time

So are you saying you've checked the connectors at the sensors themselves? Did you test them by earthing them on the block. If so, next step is to check the conections at the infamous brown multiplug. Trace the wires back from the sensors and you'll find this piece of brown plastic crap located, usually, above the gearbox. It's likely that the teminals inside will be nice and green with corrosion.

When you say 'had the connections under the bonnet checked'...do you mean:

You shorted the gauge wire and still there was no pressure reading and you checked the wiring from the gauges back to the brown plugs under the dash near the steering column (where the engine loom passes through the bulkhead).

If neither then do those so you can check that the sensors actually work and the wiring is ok.

The big brown connector in the engine bay which normally sits near the oil filler somewhere often corrodes and this is where the sensor wires come from. Check it all for bad connections.

I had the same problem and disconnected the wires leading to the oil pressure and temp sensors, attached new wire and fed these through the bulkhead and connected them (pushed in to holes) to the brown plugs under the dash. This bypasses all the standard engine wiring and I found that my sensors were fine it was the wiring which was rotten. My sump mounted temp sensor was in a bad way so replaced that for one from a scrappy.

I have a pdf of the haynes manual for 205s with the wiring diagrams if its any help?

Enjoy, Matt

Damn my slow typing! Gl beat me to it!

Just a thought but have you removed the brown plug (under the bonnet) which connects the sensor loom to the engine loom? You might have a dry plug, cover it in white grease and see what happens then
