205 Gti 1.9 - Cuts Out When Driving Through Puddles!

Recommended Posts

Hi, I have a 1987 205 gti 1.9 and it cuts out if I drive through a not very deep puddle. :o It never used to do this. After 10 mins it will reluctantly re-start and run rough for a couple of minutes before smoothing out. Grateful for any advice about things to check eg. "a sensor needs to be re-insulated" or something!! Many thanks!

sounds like the ht leads are shorting out. try a little wd40 on them. it will dispel all the mosture.

infact, you can do every wiring connector under the bonnet with it.

Check out the 3 pin plug that attaches to the dizzy.

you could try removing all the HT connections (both ends), cleaning them, give them a quick squirt with WD40 (or the like), do one at a time then you dont end up wondering which one goes where, replace each. make sure there is no moisture around the plugs.

take the distributer cap off, give it and the rotar a good wipe with a clean dry rag and replace,

give the whole lot a spray with WD40.

the above is the obvious place but it could be a multitude of places, have a look at all the wiring and the ecu, look for anything that has changed, as in a damaged ecu cover or exposed wiring, give it all a spray of water repellant (wd40 will work)

try drive slower through puddles.

hope this is of some help

I had the same problem on my mk2 golf. (silly designers put the dizzy on the front of the engine just above the sump) and it really really got wet and bad.

Some times even heavy rain would cause running issues. So, after doing all of what was explained above i resorted to DIY modifications to the dizzy and my solution (which solved all the problems) was to get a rubber glove and cut small holes in the end of the each of the fingers, then force the HT lead through the small hole, cable tie the glove around the back of the dizzy and ... hey presto, waterproof Dizzy cap.

HTH

I had this the other day (although the puddle was a 6 inch deep 25 yard flood...) water got up and drenched the coil and dizzy cap, by half way through i was on 2 cylinders  Had to go back through it as well, pulled all the leads and dried em off, didnt have a screwdriver with me to take the cap off so had to let it dry of its own accord, sat in my little cloud of steam while everything dried out, tied a handy bin bag around the HT bits, and crawled back through it... success!
