Head Skimmed / Valve Clearance

Recommended Posts

Scooby Max

Good morning all..

I've just had my 1.6 gti head skimmed (a couple of thou reduced),and the valve clearances are ok.

Question is.. is there sufficient distance between valve and piston or do I have to adjust/compensate?

Cheers

Max

funnily enough, there was this topic posted in the same forum yesterday http://forum.205gtidrivers.com/index.php?s...=101470&hl=

the 1.6 isn't too far different from the 1.9 at all, but I would check with someone who knows the exact spec of the position of the piston @ TDC, and clearance available.

You could do this yourself BTW if you have the engine disassembled, simply measure how far the valve lifts off the seat @ TDC which I think is 90 degrees from the pinned position, then compare this with how far down the bore the piston sits @ TDC.

was it skimmed simply to clean up the surface and ensure it was true? if so I would use an appropriately sized thicker gasket which will place the head back in the original position, otherwise you will need to fit a vernier pulley to compensate for the change in the cam timing which happens when you bring the camshaft closer to the crankshaft.

It will be fine. Piston/Valve clearance is never an issue (unless you have a monster race cam) and they could do with a bit more compression.

Cheers guys..

As you say, there's no problem with clearance.

I've just checked all the gaps, and only the 2 exhaust valves require different size shims.

I'll have a good mooch around to see if any vernier pulley's are for sale.. :o

Sorry Welshpug, I forgot to say..

I bought the car with a blown head gasket, that was the reason.

Everything is ready for bolting back up tomorrow.. :)

However.. I have a single copper washer that appeared from nowhere..!?

I've been scanning the Haynes manual, and may have found the reason?

"Note The diagnostic socket plus copper washer under the bolt at timing end belt end" Could this be the reason?

Can anyone throw any light or show a photo of the above please.

Yours confused

Max

The 1.6 GTI doesn't have any form of diagnostic socket.

Where did you find that in the Haynes manual & what manual is it you have? Service & repair or workshop?

Graham.

Same one as I've got here.

The only thing I can think of that they are calling the diagnostic socket is the crank sensor lead that is usually hooked under the clips on the rocker cover (brown three pin plug that goes nowhere) which is only used on the Peugeot diagnostics machine.

Still, I can#t remember seeing a copper washer anywhere near there & didn't fit on when I rebuilt my engine.

I had several spare copper washers from the head gaskedt kit I used but thats just because they are kits for a whole range of cars with the XU engine in & not all used on every variant.

Graham.
