Radiator Fan Wiring

Hey,

 

Been searching but havent found an answer to my question. Im fitting the radiator and fan assembly to my mi16 conversion but i cant remember where the power supply to the fan goes to. Its a grey plug with a black and red wire to it, and its got similar plugs to the ones that go to the power distribution block, but it doesnt fit in any of the slots.

 

And im not sure it goes to the power distribution block as that would feed 12v to both the wires.

 

Would appreciate any help please.

From what I can remember, I'm sure it does go to the shunt box (distribution block). If you're saying the plug looks the same as what's already plugged into the shunt box then that's really the only place it must go.

Yes it does go to the shunt box (power distribution block) it may only plug in one way.

It looks like one of the plugs for the power distribution box (rectangular and flat), but i removed all my plugs from the box and it fits none of them. Its actually slightly bigger so am wondering whether it fits somewhere else?

 

Also, like i said that its got both the red and black wires to it, so surely it shouldnt go into the power dist box and it would supply 12v to both the live and earth wires to the fan....??

The plug for the fan system is black & should fit the shunt box but there is another grey one that plugs into the loom from the shunt box & relay loom. They are slightly keyed for direction on the shuntbox but iirc they will still fit into any of the slots underneath.

 

You haven't mistaken th grey one for the shunt box plug have you?

The grey one is the one connected to the power supply out of the fan. The black one you mentioned..is that in the main engine loom..? and if it is, would that be on the mi loom..?

Sort of what Jas-E said. The one with black and red wires in it comes directly off the fan. This plugs into the fan loom which among others has the resistor plug (for the low speed running), a small 4 or 5 way plug which does nothing and is paralled up to the fan switch (which mounts on the rad with 3 terminal) then there's another plug which fits into the power distribution block (which looks similar but isn't the same as the one from the fan with balck and red wires). You'll also have an earth there of some description

Thanks for your reply. I have found all the connections that you have mentioned, but cant find where the plug coming from the fan plugs into the loom...!!i have neatened all the wiring behind the passenger side headlight, but cant seem to find where that plug would plug into.

 

Iv found the connector to the rad switch, and the one to the power distribution box, aswell as the 5 pin paralled plug that does nothing. But cant seem to find where the fan plug with the black and red wires go...any ideas..?

As said the fan loom has a connection for:

 

The Fans (Grey)

The Distribution Box (Black)

The Temp Sensor (Blue)

The Resistor (Brown I think)

The Testing Block (Brown)

 

The loom can be pulled out of the car so I would suggest doing that to find the grey plug that the fans attach to. In other words there will be another grey connector of the opposite sex somewhere that the fans plug into, unless you accidently removed it.

The black one for the shunt box won't be on the Mi loom.

 

The fan relay power loom is a totally self enclosed loom that only runs between the shunt box, relay, temp switch & fan with the plugs as mentioned above by Hugh.

 

You wouldn't be the first person to tidy this area up & throw the rest of the fan loom out though.
