1.9 8v Bottom End

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,

I took off the sump last night to try and sort out the oil surge issue and out of curiosity checked the rod bearings and got a nasty surprise. They were full of ridges and scratches and it the same on the crank.

I just bought the roll cage, ignition management and various other bits that have shattered my budget and wasn't expecting a bottom end rebuild. I measured my compression and got 11.3 to 11.5 on all pistons so I'm thinking the piston rings are ok. Head has been completely rebuilt two months ago so wouldn't want to take it off.

Will I get away with changing the crank and bearings without taking the head off? Since I have good compression i shouldn't need to change the piston rings. Only worry left would be rod bolts, right?

Cheers,

Andrei

Id check the condition and measure the rod bolts and make sure they haven't been stretched. If all ok then I'd take the crank out and have a regrind and get bearings to suit, seeing as the head has been rebuilt not long ago. Failing that you could source a know good bottom end and swap over the head. :P

No chance of getting another bottom end or even another crank here. The crank has already been reground once and I was looking for another one, preferably never reground.

I've found a 1.9 diesel crank, will that work?

I *think* it will, worth having a search to be sure.

I've searched for hours but didn't find anything.

I found a diesel crank for 50 Euros and a crank from a hillclimb 1.9 8v that did two stages and was crashed for 150 Euros. I don't know if the diesel crank has the same weight and if it counterweights are the same.

The crank I have now ran less than 1000 km. The previous owner ran the engine with no oil so he replaced the crank and bearings. What could be the reason for it giving up so fast? I wouldn't want to pay 150 euros for a crank and put in the time needed to change it so it will just fail again in 1000 km.

Problem is that if bearings "pick up" and seize, you might have some shrapnel floating around the oilways. This would be difficult to wash out effectively, especially if you still have the motor in the car IMO. Other possibility is that the "reground" crank was never washed out properly when it went back in? Don't know what the answer to that might be other than a complete strip down TBH, Difficult choice I'm afraid

Did a bit of research and seems the cause for the failure was metal fillings in the oil. Haven't taken the engine out yet but I can only assume there's an absolute mess inside.

Due to stupid Romanian laws I can't change the engine block in the car so I have to fix this one. I'm guessing the crank, bearings, piston rings and liners are all gone, and also the camshaft and camshaft bearings in the head.

It would be almost impossible to come by another engine in Romania so I must save whatever I can. I got quotes of 200 Euros for a head in need of a refurb and 150 Euros for a crank.

So is there any way I can save the head, or camshaft? Can they be reground or refurbished in any way?

Also can I use a crank from a 1.9 diesel?
