One Shaft Spinning, One Not!

Recommended Posts

As title really.

Release bearing smashed a few weeks ago. Replaced whole clutch and bearing. While it was off the gearbox was rebuilt. Since putting the box back on only the passenger side shaft is spinning. The drivers one seems to be seated correctly and the intermediate bearing looks ok. Its not leaking oil from the shaft seal either. Just not spinning! Any ideas?

For reference its a 205 GTI 1.6 with a BE3 gearbox.

Is the car on axle stands????

Think thats how a standard diff would work, its only if you have LSD both shafts turn at same time I think

Hold the wheel on the side thats turning and the other side should spin,I think

Yes thats how a gearbox works without LSD. It'll spin the one shaft thats easiest to turn.

I flapped a bit because I'm used to my Rover, which has a LSD and spins both wheels when off the ground.

Glad I don't have to take it all back off again though! :)

Often both wheels can spin when off the ground through oil drag in the gearbox.
