Gear Selection Is A Bit Notchy

Recommended Posts

Kennyb

Hi guys

Ok i've changed my box today from be1 to be3.......everything is ok solved my dud/stiff clutch feeling but im getting same symptoms for selecting 1st and reverse........sticks when going in and others feel a bit notchy when going in!!!

Could it be the gear links not being right??? is it something that would cause this problem......(used same links from last box)??:-(

Cheers

yep course...lubed up like a amsterdam rent boy :-) Na gear box is fine for defo.. its been rebuilt recently........it cant be the box because I have exactly the same symptons as my last box where selecting gears are concerned.......

Could it be the box linkages that need adjusting?

if it did the same thing on the last box its got to be linkages, if nothing is slack, yeah try adjusting the ones above the box

Theres a small and a long one that attach to the box........what does each one do?? and how shall I adjust (lengthen, shorten what will do what????) if you get me?????

Cheers ;-)

also is there a way to check that it is just the linkages and nothing else??? (selecting when cars not running#??? selecting manually by hand without linkages on???? ;) )

shouldnt need to adjust the length of them at all unless the gearstick is oddly placed, there is a pair of nylon bushes on the L shaped lever bolted to the subframe that can go stiff, Miles and Baker BM do a bronze busk kit to replace these.

you could also replace the linkages for the ones that Miles sells which would make a fair difference.

So thats all the linkages to the box do!!!! adjust where the stick sits????

So clutch........are we looking at this now??? I replaced it about 2 years ago say 15000 - 20000 miles. shouldn't be worn out by now????should it??? aint getting any slipping

How can I check these things???? remember I had same problem on other box...only thing i've not changed is linkages and clutch (because I thought clutch would be ok)

Basically yes, The linkage's just select the gear's only when worn you get the slop or they fall off,

If the linkages are adjusted wrong all that will happen as said is the gear lever will be in a odd position, Between 1st and reverse can be like that as reverse is a plain gear

This might be a silly question but have you adjusted the clutch cable? 1st and reverse being hard to get is usually a sign that the clutch cable needs adjusting in my experience.

Was going to be my suggestion too. Surely if the clutch cable is just very slightly out of adjustment, and the clutch is not engaging 100%, it's going to make it a bit difficult to get in gear.

Clutch cable adjusted at recomended pedal travel of 140mm.......

If I adjusted the cable to be tighter and make the pedal even higher.....would this tell me if clutch is worn (ie. make the gears easier to engage on a worn clutch????)

Cheers
