What Wheels And Brakes To Shed Some Weight?

Recommended Posts

projectpug

Standard discs and stock front calipers with braided hoses and ds3000's. Ap racing fluid

Used a set of groved ebc first warped them so decided to go with cheap ones since.

I think it's because they are brand new and i take them out and hammer them on track and i can't bed them in gently beforehand.

Elise caliper weight = 1480 grams without pads and retaining fasteners

= 1920 with pads and retaining fasteners

Brackets are no problem for me to design.

Elise disc size was either FRONT DISCS ARE 288MM X 26MM or FRONT DISCS ARE 283MM X 26MM.

Does someone confirm the 306 gti-6 disc size I think its 283mm x 22mm. Which would make it too narrow.

Also does anyone have any idea about whether there are any Peugeot /Citroen brake discs that match the Elise dimensions?

This shows the elise measurements and the 307 discs the only difference is 4mm height the elise is 30mm and the 307 34mm.

Would this be the one to make the elise calipers fit with the right brackets?

Yes, by height i am sure they mean offset.

Get a pair ordered and I will do the rest Spiky.

In fact if you just drop a wheel off at mine I have gti6 discs I can use for trial fitment.

If its a track car considering the citroen c5 steelies (aluminum) might be an option, they weight in at a meeger 4.6kgs... and will fit the 307 HDI 283mm set up behind them with no clearance issues.

How much weight would you like to save off the brakes

Does anyone have a breakdown on what weighs what in the various setups?

I suspect anything with the 283*26mm disks is going to be pretty heavy...

I think lots lol

Its certainly an area i am looking at on my car. I'm thinking standard size disks with floating disks and small 2 or 4 pot calipers.

I think Phill (Rippthrough) knows the weights of quite a few discs, the 283mm and larger ones are astonishingly heavy, he can also make some brackets if you have the specs.

found some info on 306gti6.com

206 GTI 180 discs are just under 7 kilo's per side IIRC

247mm rears are 2.625 kilo's per side, although I'd expect that to vary slightly depending on the manufacturer (mine are 1.62kg per side for the sprint versions)

I have 6.9 kilos down for the 307 discs, but I believe there are two offsets, which will affect the weight.

From memory, the 305mm discs are about 9 kilos, but I'm not 100% on that so didn't list it.

My Rallye steels with ACB10s weigh just under 9kgs each (that's wheel and tyre!), along with 1.6gti brakes and that's very little unsprung weight up front! Don't know how it will cope with heavy track use, but it doesn't have a huge amount of power so I doubt I'll be heavy on the brakes.

I run 307 283x26mm discs and they are heavier but I'm on the same pair since about 2003!!

those look err different! whats the reduction in disc area like compared to the weight saving? are you sacrificing performance for weight?

Not particularly, the surface area/mass ratio goes up, they pump air more effectively as it can be drawn from both sides of the disc on the inside - they pump air across the pad surface too - and because of the way they're done, the still sweep the entire pad surface.

The disc temperature itself will peak higher of course, but pad temperatures stay much the same, and the discs cool down faster, with the really light 'sprint' ones on the right though a harder pad than normal is recommended, but it does allow you to fit huge discs on a light car to gain leverage without the normal weight penalty...

Much the same in terms of outright stopping power, as the mean leverage point is a little further out, normally have more in the way of initial bite than a plain disc, not affected by driving through standing water like a large plain disc is either.

Pad and disc wear will be higher though, as it is with grooved or drilled discs, but hey.

If you want to go all out:
