Cranks - Can I Just Check!?

Recommended Posts

A wealth of searches suggests that all the 1.9/2.0 XU9/XU10 engine cranks have the same journal diameters across all years and derivatives. So, ignoring issues with piston height and rod length, any crank - an XU9J4, XU10J4, XU9D - even these 2.1 TD cranks like DrSarty uses - would drop into any of the other blocks. The journal diameters are the same on all of them, right? 50mm for the rod ends, 60mm for the mains, yes? I know there are issues with spray bar clearance, 4 balancing webs versus 8, steel versus iron, and the whole issue of the rod length/piston height depending upon what you slotted into what (due to stroke increase), but I'm just checking on the crank fitment itself - no-one anywhere seems to suggest there are any issues around this....? Correct?

EDIT: Barring any regrinds or custom-ground journals, of course

Basically yes, although the iron block cranks sometimes foul the alloy blocks. The 2.1 TD crank has wider big ends than the others.

Thanks Sandy; understood :P

One more quick question then, sort of off the back on a thread in the Wanted section ;)

Is the XU9D turbo crank the same as an XU9J4 (mi16) one? So 88mm stroke, 8 balance webs rather than 4 (if that's what you call them). My understanding is the non-turbo ones are the lighter 4-web cranks but I'm sure I read somewhere some of the diesels have the mi16 crank in them....

The non-turbo diesels are 8 counter-weight like the Mi16. Many (but not all bizarrely) of the 1.9 TD ones are 4 counter-weight steel ones.

just looking at this as i need a crank, so are we saying that a crank from a non-turbo diesel is the same as a mi crank? when you say about stroke, will it mean that i would need different rods if i were to have a derv crank and mi rods!!

if you stick to the 1.9 D crank, that is the same stroke as the 1.9 Mi, 88mm.
