Non Starting After Cambelt Change

Well basically i did my 1stcambelt on sunday.

I got the engine to No1 TDC and locked the Cam off new belt + waterpump fitted. nicely tenstioned (able to turn the belt 90deg(just) on the untentioned side)

the engine spins over incredibly free by hand and there are no rattles or alarming knocks.

I attempted to start the car and it *coughed* then spins over + over + over.

 

I took everything off then doublechecked my work and the exact same thing cough then nothing.

 

The engine management light is on and flashes once when you put the ignition on.

There is fuel as i can smell it when i remove the plugs.

 

Is this the engine management cutting the spark?(i have not checked that there is no spark yet so dont know this as a fact) or am i missing something?

 

I work as a bus mechanic so am quite able when it comes to fixing things like brakes + suspention. but bus engines are totally different to a small car.

 

Hope someone can put me in the know here.

P.s its a keypad immobiliser. and i've also disconected the battery + ecu and left them unplugged for a couple of hours.

did you lock the crank?

 

it doesnt take alot of effort to move the crank a couple of teeth out.

keypad works as usual,

and no, i couldn't really see a way of locking it?

was just a pulley with a hub type of thing over it and a Line for TDC No1 .

it sounds like you think i've got the timiing out which i also am begining to think.

So how would i go about Re-timing it?

i've allready done it the way i thought (with No1 TDC and then the belt on with the marks lining up with the cam as they do on the crank)

There's a 6mm locking pin hole in the engine block below the thermostat housing, that allows you to lock the flywheel.

ah! never realised that.

ok well we still have the starting problem.

how would i go about Re-timimng the engine? is the above mentioned way the correct procedure?

Just put something in the locking pin hole in the block below the thermostat housing like Sandy said (check if the crank is locked). Then look if the locking pin hole in the camshaft pulley is leveled with the hole in the head. If that is ok the timing is ok and the problem is elsewere. :)

don't forget that PSA No1 is flywheel end...

 

fit the 2 locking pins job jobbed :)

What is PSA? sorry for the ignorance just want to make sure it is what i think,

which is something todo with power steering?>

Before you lock the flywheel, take a spark plug out and probe number one cylinder to find TDC before trying to lock it. Otherwise you might not locate the slot properly on the flywheel, eg the clutch bolts might catch instead and make it wrong.

i took all the plugs out anyway, just for ease to turn the engine.

If the engine turns by hand easily it sounds like you havent timed it right and whilst trying to start it , the valves have bent. If that is the case you will find the compression is low and it will be easy to turn the engine by hand.

 

The cambelt has only got to be a tooth or two out and this will be the result.

 

My cambelt came loose as i was driving, instant cut out, wouldnt start so i towed it back home and turned the engine by hand, easy to turn by hand because all 8 valves were bent, starter motor would just spin.

 

Try taking the exhaust manifold of to see if the valves have bent.
