Problem Starting When Hot

Recommended Posts

PhilCTI

I've got this slightly annoying problem where my car starts fine when cold, but when its hot takes 15 - 20 seconds of turning over before it catches and fires up, no other problems and runs fine,

it's a 1.9 on motronic injection

any ideas?

Problems like this can be a mare to diagnose.

If you have access to one, trying a known good Ignition amp could be a start. They can casue all sorts of grief.

Ive had a fault for over a year now..where if i stall the car, it wont restart for about 10 mins. Yet if i switch it off, it restarts right away just fine :)

Not normally a problem, but knowing it does this, i seem to stall it more by trying not to stall it lol :(

Our rally car does the same thing and it's fooking annoying, I have searched abut ad there des not seem to be a definitaive answer though this is what I have found as possibles, in no particular order:

  • Tachymetric relay
  • Dirty injectors
  • Fuel pump relay, they are renowned for failing as they overheat. Its located next to the ECU under the dash, near steering wheel, go for a drive and get the car nice and warm, then see how hot the relay feels and see if you can smell any burning.
  • Starter motor solenoid jamming up
  • SAD = supplementry air device, The SAD allows unmetered air in AFTER the AFM. Extra fuel is controlled by the ECU water temp sender. In the SAD there is a bimettalic strip and a small heater coil powered by the ECU, as the strip bends (effect of heating) it rotates the disc around to a closed position. I can only describe that disc as what you'd find on top of a parmesan container. All this info can be easily found on the main site anyway. To solve it just whack the SAD off and give it a clean with some carb cleaner or petrol. It could well just be clogged. Failing that just stick a wanted add up, they'll be plenty about!
  • Ignition Amp

Will keep you posted

I have exactly the same problem with my 1.6. When the engine is stone cold, it will start first turn and runs great. However when its hot, and left for 10 minutes after switch off, come to restart it and it takes 10-15 seconds to crank over and eventually start. It always will start.

Ive replaced most things in trying to cure the problem;

ignition amp

coil

leads

plugs

dizzy cap

rotor arm

SAD

hoses to and from SAD

I maybe thought injectors dirty or ecu temp sensor?

My BX16v used to do this, and it seems it's often down to a leaky (or two) injector. The fuel needs to clear before it will start.

Could be wrong, but £50 spent at this place might be your answer. It certainly can't do you or your engine (performance & economy) any harm, and it's all done by post in 2-3 days.

I had the same problem, when the engine is hot it was taking lots of revs to start, I was killing the battery. The problem solved by dist. The oil seal of dist was leaking. When we renewed it the problem vanidhed

mine does this also but i replaced my distributor oil seal two weeks ago and it hasn't cured it. injectors sound like the best possibility seing as between just us few people posting here we've swapped everything else!

there isn't a distributor on MP3.1 <_<

I've not experienced the issues you are having (I'm on MP3.1 too) but its a far easier system to work with as the ECU does a lot more for you, check the resistance of the coolant temperature sender, also check that the TDC sensor is secure.

There may be something with what a few have suggested about the injectors, mine were tested and cleaned 4 years ago, once that is done get the emissions checked again (there is a mixture pot bolted to the ECU)

Seconded! Mine was the same, took me 5 years before I pulled the injector rail out and noticed 2 injectors weeping slightly.

Thanks for the replies guys,

Funny most of you mention injectors, as I saw someone selling the injector seal kits on ebay last week and thought it would be a good idea to change them, I use ultrasonic baths at work as was going to do a diy clean myself using jet fuel, I take it you need to put 12 Volts DC on them to open them up to clean them through properly,

you need a pulse not a flat 12v, there was an article on this very subject in PPC a few months ago.

I cant fathom why its only when stalled. I cant see what happens when its stalled, that doesnt happen when its swtiched off that would cause this problem.

It restarts hot fine. But stall it when its hot and 90% of the time your fooked

Had my injectors done when i built the engine.
