Air Filter Issues

Recommended Posts

Right running an odd combination here.

Mi16 engine with 306 GTi6 inlet manifold and throttle body. It's on Mi management so need the AFM. Real mix of bits.

Anyway now I have it all in and running I cannot fit my air filter in. There is absolutely bugger all space between the AFM and inside of the pass side wing, I assume because the TB is slightly longer and the flange for the TB protrudes a fair way further than the equivalent on the Mi16 inlet.

So I am currently filterless and I don't want anything to go through the engine. I will post a picture tomorrow of just how close it is. I have searched numerous websites trying to find a dinky filter with a big enough throat but no dice.

Is there anyway I can make a DIY filter which might vaguely work? Also I don't think moving the washer bottle will help as the hose I have between TB and AFM is not flexible enough to twist that way.

Any ideas?

You could get a 90 degree elbow to attach to the TB and move the AFM, like the original 8V setup. Rally Design sell silicone connectors for decent money.

Ah good thinking, yeah could relocate the whole lot. Unfortunately the RD website throws the toys out the pram when you click on 90* elbows :)

how good is your fabrication skills?

You could make up a cold air box and use a panel filter...

Doh.. Well I think demon tweeks will sell them too, just at a higher price.

Ah nice idea, but the problem I have is the Mi management I need the AFM so it will be a lot lower, don't really want the filter that low and behind the rad sucking hot air and possibly water in, I guess only if I drive through a very deep puddle.

Yeah could try and make some kind of air box for it, skills are reasonable, sure I can concoct something. Might try the 90 degree job first though.

Anyone know why they took the resonator off the inlet manifold?? Says much better sound and performace?

Cheers for the ideas...

Yeah that's probably alright in Oz but over here.. I wouldn't be able to hit a puddle without clenching.

Apparently the resonator is there to sort out a flat spot in the rev range. I had to remove mine after a rather large backfire blew it to pieces. :)

Ahahah classic! Presumably its a flatspot in the GTi6 rev range? Does it still have a positive effect fitted to an Mi? Might be worth trying it without.

I'd consider cutting a hole in the inner wing and taking the inlet tract "down" 90 degrees, then have a filter in behind the headlamp panel. You could then box it in from the wheelarch and underneath, and duct air to it from wherever you preferred, I would remove the spotlamp and put a grille there. That way the filter is protected from road crap, but you'd have to go through deep water to get it to the filter itself.

This is also roughly where 306 GTI's and TD's have the filter.

Yeah, took me 3 days to find it though! Had to take it up to Dave Walker to see if he could work out why it wouldn't run (was on Emerald) and even he was amazed to see it. Well mine is an Mi bottom end with a 6 head, so technically a slightly smaller capacity GTI6, and I don't notice any funny flat spots. I removed the resonator (had no choice really) and just blanked the hole off.

Suppose it would be rude not to show the damage:

My understanding is that the resonation chambers where used to quieten down the instake systems on most car... It really messes with flow in the pipe too...

I\'ve got a variation on the 306 to the pics that i showed what magic had done... I\'ve got the factory S16 airbox with a pod filter in it, the end of the pod filter is recessed about 1 - 1 1/2 inches inside the airbox, so it works well as a good heat/water shield... Might be an option if your strapped for space and don\'t want to drill\\cut holes in the arches\\fenders...

I\'ve had this setup for over 3 yrs now, and the car quite regularly looks like this...

P1020488.jpg <-- this was after driving 100km home in on and off again lite rain..

P1020503.jpg <--- the morning after...

I don\'t go puddle hunting in it, but i have hit large puddles and no ill effects... had the car on the dyno nov last year and it was making 92.7KW @ Wheels...

Some of the things that my mivec friends have been doing to get around the water problem was to have a plastic plate scooping air into the area between the plastic inner wheel arch and the front bumper (the mivecs have a hole in the front guard that opens into the engine bay you can see the gap on the far side of the pic behind and to the left of the air filter) I know some of them have used a plastic mesh to stop large water drops getting up there... But it\'s a long way for water drops to go...
