Anyone Good At Noise Diagnosis?

Recommended Posts

stimpysaurus

my car started making a weird sort of humming noise yesterday (a bit like an aeroplane with a sort of wom wom wom - lol i hope that is possible to imagine).

its coming from the front and i think from the passenger side or the centre of the car. its mostly noticeable between 30-40mph and changes in sound when i increase/decrease speed.

the engine revs doesnt seem to make any difference to the noise, if im going 30mph in 4th gear and change into 3rd it stays the same.

hope someone can help!

cheers

lianne

Wom-Wom-Wom?? LOL

My diagnosis would be wheel bearings as its directly related to the speed of the wheels.

See what the other opinions are first tho.

i'd second Jimis wheel bearing suggestion although it could possibly be the intermediary bearing on the long driveshaft if you say it sounds like it might be coming from the middle of the car but 205's are weird and noises quite often appear to be ommiting from diffent parts of the car

To check the wheel bearing jack the car up and spin the wheel by hand to see if you can here anything noticible. Also grab hold of it at 3-9 and 6 -12 and give it a push/pull to see if you have got any play in it

Wom-Wom-Wom?? LOL

on second investigation id say its more of a 'wum' than a 'wom'

if it seems to be wheel bearings should i avoid using the car? i've heard that the wheels can fall off, or is that a load of crap? lol

basically i need a car to get to work and its the only one i have :)

As its only occured since yesterday, then you MAY be alright on it for a short while, but as Matt says get the wheel in the air and check for play.

Sooner rather than later is the advice I'll give....
