1.6 Gti Starting/ Cutting Out Issues

Recommended Posts

I have recently bought my second 1.6 gti & im having a few problems. Its an f plate car with 90k ish & is totally standard.

When starting the car from cold it wont idle & just cuts out unless i keep the revs up. After about a minute or so of holding the revs it will idle on its own but only if i remove my foot extremly slowly from the pedal but it still idles lumpy & if you blip the throttle the revs drop & it cuts out again. Once its properly warm it idles ok at about 900 rpm which i think is a bit low. ??

The main problem is when driving. Everytime i get to a junction or set of lights the revs drop & it either cuts out or just manages to idle if its had a good warm up. The car also has full pug service history so should have been looked after, the dizzy cap, leads & plugs are all recent.

Does anyone have any ideas, any help is much appreciated.

I agree, try a good SAD, however for a quick fix, simply tweak your idle screw (anti clockwise increases the revs) till it sit's just over a thou, this will stop the cutting out when you drop the clutch.

Thanks chaps, looks like the SAD is the problem. Do i just clean the old one or can i buy a new one & if so does anyone know the part number?

Thanks again

I had this exact problem, switched the AFM and it runs alot better now, although mine was overfuelling immensely. I can now start the car without my foot on the throttle, I can stop and not have the engine die and it will idle all day long!

Get yourself on e-bay, there's normally a few knocking about I can recommend a seller called escortbuffy i've had loads of stuff off him and he's always been really good. If you e-mail him on e-bay he'll have one.

Managed to sort the 205 over the weekend. I looked at replacing the SAD unit & it looked a bit tricky with regard to access so i went for the easy fix first.

I removed & cleaned the afm along with the connected intake parts & cleaned the throttle body. I also removed the large flat head screw that narrows to a point with the rubber washer (idle screw??) to find it was covered in muck so i gave this a scrub as well.

The car now starts without the need for gas, idles at about 1000rpm & dosent cut out when slowing down. What are the two screws on top of the throttle body, one is described above & the other is opposite but is much smaller with a small clip around it?

I have just got the same problem with an mi 16 conversion i've had done . The problem is finding a good AFm to replace the old one. Any ideas where I can get a good one? ;)

I have the same problem, I changed the TPS but that made no difference.

I have a couple of AFMs so will give it a try tomorrow probably. Fingers crossed.

Same AFM as the 1.9 IIRC so just pop down to your local pug breakers. or pop a wanted ad up on here.

I tried changing the AFM today but that alone didnt make any difference to begin with, meaning that my AFM was probably fine in the first place. While I was at it I gave it a spray after with 10k boost I had lying around (probably just decoking cleaner). No difference as far as I could tell.

However because it has an open style induction kit I swapped it for the OEM airbox minus induction pipe. That didnt seem to make a difference to begin with but after running it for a few minutes and tweaking the idle screw, it started and settled straight away. revving did not cause it to stall. I will have to try it again tomorrow see what it does from a cold start. fingers crossed (again)

oh yes, also removed an ecotek valve. Don't know if that made a difference!
