Diesel 205

Recommended Posts

rattly_black

Hi All,

I know people say diesel 205's go on forever but my one has taken that literally and even when I shut the ignition off it keeps on chugging.

To make matters worse I have changed the start / stop solenoid but with no joy.

I have checked all the wiring as all seems as well as can be for a 16 year old car.

Therefore my only guess is there is something wrong with the fuel pump but just wanted a second opinion. Plus does anybody know how much I would be looking at if I need a new pump?

All help appreciated

James

What pump has it got fitted & have you got the right stop solenoid?

We have a GPU at work with a Bosch pump & that won't stop running & its aknown fault with bosch who offer a modification of a stop cable that you pull & holsd out until it has stopped completely because the rubber bung on the end of the stop solenoid doesn't full yseal the aperture so it chugs on for ever if you don't pull the cable.

Have you tried disconnecting the wire to see if it stops? The feed to the solenoid comes from the glow plug relay iirc so its possible the relay is dying & leaving an open circuit.

Did you check that the small spring within the stop solenoid was in place?

If you don't have any joy I have a spare stop solenoid you could try.

With the engine off take a lead from the (+) battery to the solenoid, does it make a clicking noise?

Cheers for your help so far:

Pugtorque: Mine is not a Bosch one its the other make which I can't remember at the mo.

Jimistdt: I will try this tonight thanks

ORB: There is no excesive smoke coming from the car. Yesterday it did start to splutter to a stop when the ignition was closed off but this morning it is running even when the ignition is switched fully off.

Going to pop to a local diesel specialist today so will let you know what they say although on the phone they reconne it could be a sign that the pump is on its way out.

Cheers

James

Thanks for all your advice and offers!

Looks like the replacement start stop solenoid was dodgy as poped into a local diesel specialist in Southampton who replaced it with one of theres and so far engine is cutting off perfectly everytime.

Cheers

Ah - that may be the problem I'm getting then?

First my car wouldn't start My "Won't Start" Thread and now it won't stop!

I've tried removing the wire to the stop solenoid - makes no difference. It's a Lucas pump - says Rotodiesel on the stop solenoid.

I have to stall the car to shut her down - not good.

With everything off I ran a wire from the battery's positive terminal to the stop solenoid and there's a faint click so I was hoping it's ok.

Took the solenoid off yesterday and made sure the spring & plunger were free - there's a fair bit of marking on one side of the plunger so it's obviously wearing against the side of the solenoid body - maybe it's at an angle and not cutting the fuel supply?

Any thoughts on what else I should check before starting down the "buy this & see if it fixes it" route?

Thanks,

Steve

Glad you fixed it James, it was bound to be something simple like the stop solenoid not shutting unless the engine was running on its own oil & very close to death.

Steve, a new stop solenoid is around £10 iirc & its pretty much the only thing that can make a diesel keep running even with everything electrical disconnected. I now when mine went I was walking away from the car after parking it up & keys in my pocket when I noticed the engine was still running.

If you have a friendly local garage that has a stop solenoid you could try to see if it fixes it I would but its the only part imo that fails over time which causes this problem.

Hi Graham,

I had a feeling that would be the answer - I've done the keys out & keep running trick too!

Seen this one on E-bay - seems cheap: Stop Solenoid £4.99 Perhaps too cheap?

Thanks,

Steve

Its a simple solenoid so I don't see how they could make one to cheap as long as it works.
