Suitable Cam?

Recommended Posts

Atari Boy

I suspect I know the answer so please no flames but would a Kent ‘race’ cam as below, be any good if fitted to my 1.9 8v weekend/track car? The engine is standard save K & N induction kit although I hope to fit bike carbs.

Application - race

Power Band - 3000-7800

Cam Lift(mm) - 12.42 E 12.59

Valve Lift(mm) - 12.16 E 12.29

Duration - 309 Deg E 314 Deg

Timing - 49/80 85/49

Full Lift - 106 Deg

VC (mm) - 0.25 E 0.30

LTDC - 4.49mm

Thanks

Jonny

if the cam is up to the advetised specs you would need a raiised idle speed to keep it ticking over and probably need to adjust the dizzy curve to suit. Carbs would work well with it though :)

you need a lot more compression than the standard 9.6-1, fitting 1.6 pistons should give you enough, but you'll need to do something to the ignition to make the most out of it.

Think it would also need an increasse in fuel pressure to stop the mixture from going lean if you keep the std injection.

Thanks chaps, not as bad as I was expecting but not ideal I guess.

With the bike carbs and upped compression it would work, but with standard compression and the flap AFM I think it would be terrible.

Thats a pt28 i have one in mine well setup comes in at 4500 to 7500+ RPM. You want at least 11.1 compression and a minimum of a 1.6 box to keep it on "cam".

IMO be a waste of time on a engine thats being used on the road ideally you need full rebuild , balanced bottom end crank/flywheel to enable the engine to run at the RPM's wanted by this cam.

Have a look at a pt27 or catcams the one with 290ish duration they are slightly milder and more suited to a car used on the road.

I've built a 1.9 with bike carbs, flowed head, 10.2 CR and using 285 cam, wouldn't want to go to much wilder for road use really and without uprated internals and head you would not get most out of cam as you wont safely rev high enough.

What lift can the std springs go to and rev to??

I know dave baker does springs for 8.2krpm and 12.something mm lift

270/272 would be the max i'd go for if you want to use it on the road majority of the time aswel as some fun. Anything bigger will be lumpy idle and a general PITA on std inlet.

Get the carbs on and a 285 duration (Piper 285 is good) and you will have a nicely sorted road car :D which is also suited to the odd track blast.

A true 285deg cam will never idle on the std Injection.

As far as Catcams go, Part no. 4900365 is the wildest that will still idle.

I run the 309 deg. cam in my "race only" 1.9, 45 mm weber. Would not recomend it for roaduse. Almost completely dead under 4000 rpm and idels at 1500rpm. Perfect for track use though.

Cheers
